Here are a few notes regarding land, construction and grants:

Construction costs:
Warehouse type construction of a curling club runs approximately $51 per square foot (without the chiller). We have a chiller donated by the Rochester Curling Club and a dehumidification system donated by the Ardsley Curling club.

Land prices:
Commercial land in the 2 acre size range runs anywhere from $30K to $100K with prices at the upper end when locations are easily accessed from major highways with hotel accomodations nearby. Besides ready access to utilities, flat land (no fill) is desirable to cut down on considerable site preparation costs.

Grants and loans:
The Pittsburgh Curling Club is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization giving us tax-free status and therefore saving us thousands of dollars annually in taxes. Significant accounting practices are required to maintain this status. In addition, LOTS of IRS publications are available on this topic for your reading pleasure.

The Pittsburgh Curling Club is listed on the Pittsburgh Gives’s nonprofit listing website at Pittsburgh Gives. Last year’s Day of Giving effort earned the PCC over $7000 in donations and matching funds.

The PCC is currently assembling the required information for the Darwin Curtis Fund grant program offered through the USCA. From their website:
The U.S. Curling Association has been selected to administer the Darwin Curtis Fund grant program on behalf of The Chicago Community Trust. The USCA is now accepting grant applications in two categories — growth & development and bricks & mortar. A total of $20,000 is available to be awarded for the 2012-13 cycle. Application deadline is 5 p.m. CST on June 22
