The Prez Speaks

Chesapeake Funspiel 2011

by Andy Banfield on January 15, 2011

You love it, you want more of it…It’s the President’s blog from the Bonspiel of the Week!  This weeks edition focuses on the Pittsburgh invasion of the Chesapeake Curling Club on the beautiful Eastern Shore of Maryland.  That’s right, Maryland.  Anyone know what NFL football team plays in Maryland?  I said NFL you Redskin fans!!  Yes, we step into the Club warm room and less than 10 seconds after we are there, we hear GO RAVENS!!.  Oy Vey.  We have a Friendly rivalry with our Chesapeake brethren with our Steelers and Ravens.  This makes 2 out of 3 years that two teams are playing each other in the playoffs.  I’m not much of a trash talker, but remind me how the last playoff game went??  Oh Yeah, that put us in the Super Bowl.  Pittsburgh  6  Lombardi’s — The OLD BROWNS – 1.  Let me know when you get to 3 and we’ll start taking it seriously.

Meanwhile, back to the shenanigans on the ice.  Our first game was at 11:15 this morning, a nice leisurely morning that us out of towners aren’t used to.  Our first game was against the Sue Mitchell skipped team of Chesapeakeans.  It was a great game that we were fortunate to prevail 8-5.  The turning point in the game came when we were able to steal 3 in the 6th end to take a 7-3 lead.  We also got to blank the 1st End so I was a happy guy.  Those of you who follow me on the blogs and at home know that I LOVE blank ends!!

During the first draw, 2 of our other Pittsburgh teams were also on the ice.  However, Team Buffington and Team Marvin-Ryall were less fortunate as they lost their first games.   The fourth Pittsburgh team, skipped by Brian Stuart did win their match later in the day.

The events of today setup an interesting potential draw for the Steel City Curlers.  IF, and this is a BIG IF, Team Banfield and Stuart win their games tomorrow at 8:00 AM (ugh..) they will play each other in the semi-final of the A Event, assuring that one Pittsburgh Team will be in the A Event Final.  If both teams lose, the entire bottom half of the C Event will be Pittsburgh Teams playing each other GUARANTEEING that a Pittsburgh Team will be in the C Event Final.  Interesting how you travel 5 hours to play your club members.  But is on dedicated ice so that makes it much better.

Well, it’s almost midnight so the Prez has to get some sleep.  Getting older you know.  We’ll close the bar tomorrow like we always do though.  That’s a promise.  I’m looking forward to breakfast tomorrow as they have the COOLEST Pancake Making Machine you have EVER seen.  I may take a video of it for posterity.  Yep, I’m an engineering geek.

Good Luck Pittsburgh Teams tomorrow and Good Luck Steelers.  It will be a much quieter night if you can pull off the W for us.  We’re in enemy territory…we’re under siege…we need your help!!  GO STEELERS!!

8 Resolutions for 2011

by Andy Banfield on January 2, 2011

Howdy folks.  Been awhile since I’ve been here, but now with the renewed energy of a New Year, and the fact that Dick Clark keeps on, keeping on, guess I should too!  So, here’s my first post for the beginning of 2011.  Though it may be an unoriginal idea to do a resolutions blog, I figure if the Networks can keep dishing out crappy reality shows, instead of actually thinking and coming up with original, thoughtful, serial shows, so can I!!

Thusly, here are my Resolutions for 2011 for the Pittsburgh Curling Club:

1. I resolve to lose 10 pounds…Isn’t it a law that every resolution list has to include this?

2. I resolve to deliver every stone with a rock-foot-rock-foot slide method.  As long as the knee-hip-knee-hip cooperate.

3. I resolve to sweep 1 more stone every game than I do now to help my teammates.  That should bring my sum total to 2 per game.

4. I resolve to be more involved with our new members to help them with this wonderful game and to continue to bring them into the best organization I have EVER been involved in.

5. I resolve to find a new technology that will convert hockey ice to curling ice in under 8 minutes with only 5 people helping.  It will involve some type of nuclear power source so the NRC approvals may take some time.  Also, it will make dosimeters a lovely accessory to be sold in the Logo Shop.

6. I resolve to make sure that we DEFINITELY have a PCC Golf Outing this summer.  Yeah, I know, I’ve said this for about 5 years, but this time I mean it!! (All else fails, it will be a mini-golf tournament at RMUISC)

7. I resolve to continue to look at vacant pieces of land and empty buildings as diamonds in the rough and to keep envisioning them as a curling paradise here in Pittsburgh. I also continue to resolve that no matter how many time I hear NO, I will keep looking…

8. I resolve to always remember my 4 years as President of this Club as some of the best of my life. Thanks gang…

Checkin’ out the new digs

by Andy Banfield on November 21, 2010

Hello everybody!

Hope you are enjoying our new look website.  Website High Priestess Marie, Amazingly Technical Brian, and Graphically Gifted Frank have produced an absolutely beautiful new web presence that will continue to cement our place on the internet as one of the best in the Curling World!  It is informative, well organized, and great looking.  Thanks guys for all of your hard work on this.  I know it took many long hours, but it was worth it.  Members of the Club, next time you see one of these 3 Web Stars, tell them thanks!

Now, all we need is to get the button that puts $1 million in the bank account for the new building.  Let me know how that goes…

Remember, no curling this weekend.  I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving, even those who don’t like turkey.  One thing that I know I am thankful for is our club and those of you who work tirelessly to make this club what it is. I hope that there are more good things in store for our club in the future.

With a wonderful sound of roaring rocks in the RMUISC Arena, curling returned to the ice for the 2010-2011 season. 24 teams are raring to go and challenge for divisional and Club pride! I hope that everyone who has joined the Club has a fantastic year. We still have room, so if you want to join in on the fun, please don’t hesitate. We’d love to have you!!

Hey, Prez is Still Alive and He Needs YOU!!!

by Andy Banfield on August 30, 2010

OK, so it’s been like 4 months since I updated this. Lots of things happening, and not all good. As most of you know, my health hasn’t been the best. I’ve been struggling with my knees to the point that I curled with a Stick for the first time….ever….at Tropicurl. Always good to curl in a bonspiel with something you’ve never used before!!

But outside of that, Tropicurl went great. We had some hiccups as we always do, so there is room for improvement. One thing that we were down on this year was volunteers to help with setup and ice preparation. I think we had TOO many people last year and this year everybody assumed, eh, they’ll be OK.

Well, guess what happens when you assume. That’s right….you’re wrong most of the time!! Never assume that we have enough help not only for Tropicurl but for anything we do in this Club.

This is a volunteer organization and everyone can use help with something. If someone turns you down for help, be it on the ice crew, warm room, etc., let me know and I’ll have a talk with them.

As we continue to progress toward our own facility, more and more people will have to step up and take on leadership roles in the Club.

Don’t be afraid to offer your time and talents. You might just find that someone needs them, and you can make new friends…for life!! We are CURLERS after all…

See you in September!
