| USWCA update 1-09 |
|
|
Hello Ladies of PCC,
It is hard to believe that 2008 is gone and 2009 is here. It seems like just last
week I was mailing my registration form for another season of curling. Even
though so much is going on, I wanted to take a few minutes to update you about your membership in the United States Women’s Curling Association (USWCA). Some of you who have been members of the PCC for a few years may be
familiar with the USWCA, but for those of you who are not, the USWCA was founded in 1947 to promote and conserve the best interests of the sport among women curlers throughout the United States. The PCC is one of the 68 member clubs and the PCC ladies are among the almost 3,000 members nationwide. All women who are current members in PCC are also paid members in the USWCA. This is a great benefit for PCC ladies. With your membership you are eligible to enter USWCA sponsored bonspiels and events such as the 5 Year & Under Bonspiel. The USWCA 61st National Bonspiel will be held February 11 – 15th, 2009 at the Wauwatosa Curling Club in Wauwatosa, WI. If you can not make it
to Wauwatosa this February, mark your calendar for the event next year,
February 10 – 14th, 2010 hosted by the Schenectady NY Curling Club. For those ladies 55 and older, the USWCA sponsors an annual Senior Women’s National Bonspiel. The event is attended by women 55 years of age an older from all member areas.
Check out the redesigned USWCA website,
www.uswca.org.
The site provides additional bonspiel event information and also is a great resource for curling
news and information. They even have information for purchasing their USWCA pins. The proceeds from merchandise and pins sales goes to support the sport
of curling with emphasis on outreach for the sport of curling and juniors programs (junior rocks, brooms, assistance for juniors to compete in national events, etc.).
If you have any questions, or are interested in any of their bonspiels, check out the USWCA website or contact me on a Saturday league night or through our website
Here's my email:Jen Poeschl-> sponsors@pittsburghcurlingclub.com
Good Curling,
Jennifer Poeschl

One of the great things about belonging to a Club working on 7 years in existence is that you get to know alot of great people. Some of them become lifelong friends, teammates, or bonspieling companions. As President, I try to get to know everyone, at least a little bit.
One of the bad things about belonging to a Club working on 7 years is that the longer you know people, the probability of losing some of those people increases.
In the span of just over 2 weeks, we have lost 2 of our Family members. Dr. Robert Burchesky and Jack Stankiewicz. My deepest condolences go out to the Burchesky and Stankiewicz families.
I first met Dr. Burchesky at a Steelspiel event a few months after his son Steve had taken me to my first Bonspiel. He was decked out in his curling regalia and was a sight to behold. This was the sport I was interested in!! His stories about curling were amazing. He had become a fixture on the Sunday morning of Tropicurl behind the glass watching the curling and the final events.
"Captain Jack" joined the Club after stopping by at a Steelspiel "just to see what this curling was all about". He later joined the club. Jack had been through some health problems in recent years, but if he could make it to curling, or even one of our BORING Board Meetings, he was there. He had a zest for life and for the sport of Curling that I hope I have at 50, let alone 70.
It truly is an amazing Club when people like this, that we only get to see once a week, if we are lucky, have such a profound impact on our lives. I'm missing Dr. Burchesky and Jack today. It is not a good feeling. I'm sure that they would think I was silly for feeling this way. But that's what happens when you are Family. The Pittsburgh Curling Club is an amazing Family, and as we continue to Grow, I hope we stay that way...A Family. We are connected to each other, but not only by Curling, but through the friendships we make along the way.
So, to Bob and Jack, I Raise My Broom to A Shot, An End, and A Life Well Played.
Good Curling....
