What's a "Learn-to-Curl" session?
It's the fastest and best way to get the hang of curling. Held on Saturday nights at the same time as club league curling, a half hour of off-ice instruction starts you off so you'll learn what the game is all about. Then a half-hour of on-ice practice to give it a try and get your balance. For the next hour, you'll get to play a real game!!! By the end of the session, you'll be a curler! It's that easy!!!
Who can
"Learn-to-Curl"? Can my kids try it?
Curling is a
"lifetime" sport for people of all ages and abilities. We love for kids to try
curling!! Because it takes a certain amount of strength to slide the 42 pound granite
stones down the ice, kids about 9 years and up are generally able to
participate. We can also accommodate wheelchair curlers and those who may not be as
flexible as they once were with "stick" curling. Don't know what that is? Don't worry,
just come to the sessions and we'll get you curling. Waivers must be signed by all participants. Parents or legal
guardians must sign waivers for children under 18 years of age. Waivers are
available at curling sessions or you can request one in advance by emailing
Dan at learn2curl@pittsburghcurlingclub.com.
How much does it cost?
Pricing will soon be set for the 2010-2011 season. Please check with Dan for current rates.
Where is the Pittsburgh Curling Club?
Pittsburgh's ONLY curling club is located at the Robert Morris University Island Sports Center on Neville Island, just off I-79 exit 65. See the RMUISC link
on our main page for maps & directions.
(Address: 7600 Grand Avenue Pittsburgh, PA 15225)
What do I do when I get to the Island?
Just enter the building through the front doors and purchase a curling wristband (unless prepaid with a reservation) from
the main desk. It's
as easy as that!!! The Pittsburgh Curling Club is located in the Stadium Rink (October to March) and in the Olympic Rink (September, April & May). The Island staff can give you directions
inside the building.
Do I need any equipment?
No! We have all the equipment you need to learn to curl. Just be sure to wear
warm, comfortable clothing - track pants or sweatpants work best and athletic
rubber soled shoes such as tennis shoes. You'll
be
good to go!!
Is curling hard to do?
Curling is easy to learn and fun to play right from the first stone you throw.
Most everyone we meet has seen curling televised at the Winter Olympics - looks easy, right? Curling is a sport of strategy and finesse and, as with any
sport, the more you do it the better at it you become.
What if I like it?
You can join the Pittsburgh Curling Club as an individual, couple, team or even a group. We can help by placing you on a
team
with more experienced players or we can help you organize your team. Already,
many people living in the Pittsburgh
area are already curling in the regular league. Some are even traveling to other clubs and
competing in curling tournaments called bonspiels. Check out the membership page for information on fees.
Come and try curling - fun is just a stone's throw away!
We hope to see you soon!
